Possible Causes:
1.Weather and Airport Conditions
During the landing phase of the flight, Kozhikode's weather conditions were quite bad due to which the pilot had done multiple go-around procedures for the safe landing of the aircraft. A Go-around is performed when the pilot in command decides to abort the landing and come in for another attempt.
Due to rains in the airport area, the runway had also become more slippery and wet which makes a landing aircraft prone to runway over - shotting and skidding.
Also, the runway length at Kozhikode airport is quite short at around 2,860 meters long it is also a table-top runway which means there is a cliff or a gorge in any of it's sides.
When the after the fist failed approach the pilots decided to land from the other runway which was runway 10, it had been reported that runway 10 had a tailwind of ~ 10 Knots which means that there was wind blowing from its back, you generally need to avoid this as you want to go against the wind while landing which would help you break
AS PER NOW IT IS THE MOST PROMINENT CAUSE
2.Pilot Error
There is also a possibility that the cause of this could be a mishap by the pilots, 10 years ago, there was a similar accident involving the same family of aircraft (B737), the same airline and with the same airport of origin, Dubai International, but the crash happened at Mangalore an airport with many similar characteristics as
Kozhikode airport. It was Air India Express Flight 812, before the landing leg of the flight the Captian was taking a nap, then while the aircraft was in the final approach, the plane was in a very steep approach and very unstable, although the first officer repeatedly asked the captain to Go-around the Captian ignored his calls, when the plane landed the tries burst and due to which the plane overshot the runway and fell into the cliff before exploding into flames.
3.Mechanical Failure
- Braking Systems: As I and Feplay were debating in the comments section whether the landing gear braking systems failed due to a hydraulic failure or were manual switched off by the pilots. Well, that's a possible cause of the crash that due to a Hydraulic failure the braking systems didn't engage and the plane wasn't able to stop in time. I would like to thank Feplay to introduce this topic, this topic had almost gone over my mind.
2. Avionics: Morden planes are equipped with a feature called auto-thrust, it changes the percentage of the thrust applied automatically by analyzing the inputs from the Speed altitude and various other sensors
Possible Preventions:
1.Diversion: Diversion would have been the best chocie the pilot could have made to save the lives of his passengers (i am stating this assuming that he had enough fuel to divert and the weather conditions were better in the divertion airport) airport he could have diverted to was Cochin International Airport.
2.Runway End Safety Areas (RESA): In simple terms RESA is a type of cushion that is placed at the end of a runway (especially short and the tabletoped ones) to prevent over-shotting, although is it's cost is high it cas save the lives of many. Due to the rise in corruption in India, such life-saving equipment isn't implemented

Very Clear documentation
ReplyDeleteAre you an Aviation expert ?
Not exactly an expert but more of an Aviation Enthusiast.
DeleteActually another reason can be due to the tyres getting locked while braking which on a wet runway can make it skid. Although planes have a system sort of like the ABS in our cars which tries to prevent this to happen but if this skidding was due to the tyres skidding it might be due to a hydraulic system or engine failure or the pilots might have manually disengaged the system which they should not have done in this case. If you wanna know more about the ABS kind of system in planes I suggest you to see this video - https://youtu.be/HreVm2_roUs . Hope it helps
ReplyDeletesorry I gave the wrong link for the video the actually and correct link is - https://youtu.be/vZmS661zijo
Deletesorry again
Yes, that's also a possible reason but even if there was an anti-skid system in this aircraft, we also have the thrust reversers which make the engines thrust go the opposite way and
Deleteincrease the drag to stop the plane. We have to wait for some confirmation from DGCA.
Yeah but as of what I know if there is no traction on the runway then a reverse thrust plays a minimal role and in the case that there was a hydraulic or engine failure then also the reverse could not have been done
DeleteWe also need to keep in mind that Kozhikode runway is short, well thanks Feplay for you suggestion
DeleteAlso thrust reversers don't apply drag they direct the exhaust of the engine towards the front which in a way instead of pushing it forward it applies force on the plane in a backward direction
DeleteYes your right, but because of the thrust reversers the plane also is sort of pushed against the ground which will give some traction.
DeleteAnother thing can be that the pilots tried to do a very soft landing even thought the runway was wet, this is done to prevent structural damage but in such cases like this where the runway is short and wet they should have tried to do a little bit of a hard landing which would allow the wheels to get to the runway and not just skid on the water and even if there would be some structural damage if the pilots did the hard landing in a good way without too much acceleration and downwards speed than necessary then only a little bit of damage to the plane would be there but most probably no loss of life
DeleteWell, we can't say that. We saw that the pilot was doing multiple go-arounds and also the 737 is made for short runways , it can withstand hard landings quite easily and am pretty sure that the pilots were well aware of this fact.
DeleteYou can also watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfFZ2-Am-Zk
ReplyDeleteThanks
DeleteAlso since there were many go around procedures the plane lost fuel making it lighter which reduced the amount of pressure the tires put on the ground which in turn could have caused the skidding
ReplyDeleteI don't agree
DeleteIf you dont agree I would love to hear why

DeleteHi, I would love to get in touch with you so where can I contact you ?
ReplyDeletehi i want my name mentioned here too
ReplyDeleteSure, follow these steps

2.Tell the name you what to be Displayed
3. if you have a website, please share it's link
hi did u read the possible reasons by the other pilots it is in times of india go check it out and update .
ReplyDeleteYou have stated that a RESA might be a possible prevention but since the runway was a tabletop one there would have been no space to have a RESA
ReplyDeleteYes, your right
DeleteHi, it would be really helpful if you could please tell me your source for the pilot error section, thanks
ReplyDeleteI have written it myself
