What is Ashwagandha ?

Withania somnifera, known commonly as ashwagandha, Indian ginseng, poison gooseberry, or winter cherry, is a plant in the Solanaceae or nightshade family. Several other species in the genus Withania are morphologically similar. This species is a short, tender perennial shrub growing 35–75 cm tall. Tomentose branches extend radially from a central stem. Leaves are dull green, elliptic, usually up to 10–12 cm long. The flowers are small, green, and bell-shaped. Commonly used as a medicinal herb in Ayurvedic medicine, it is a very potent cure for most of the illnesses if taking in the right doses.

Researchers used the properties of Ashwagandha to target some of the main illness causing enzymes in the body and split proteins, Mpro (Main protease) which help in replication and spread. It was observed that one of the compounds present in ashwagandha, called, Withanone (Wi-N) and another natural medicine, New Zealand Propolis are quite effective and useful in blocking and weakening the structure of Mpro. Hence, if used in the production of a COVID-19 vaccine, in the right quantity and dosage, ashwagandha can be helpful in dealing and might even be stopping the spread of coronavirus.

When will it be available widely on the market ?
